creating a bar height work space

we started a whole home organization project recently for a lovely family living on beautiful lake norman. one of the spouses is an entrepreneur with a retail presence (fashion jewelry & personal & home accessories) in several area brick-&-mortar establishments as well as selling jewelry on-line. we will be turning an unused formal dining room ~ their spacious open concept living, eating & kitchen space more than suits their lifestyle ~ into a workspace. our criteria: the inventory must be visible & accessible to re-stock locations & that there is a place to work, photograph & ship. our plan is build-out a bar-height work station in the middle of the room & our inspiration is an image that has been our one of our laptops for quite a while ~

Bookcase-Modern-and-Sophisticated-Home-Office-Ideas

we love the idea of storage on both the inside & the outside of what are essentially bookcases supporting the work surface top. so, we went scouting on both pinterest & houzz to find more examples of this concept to help fine-tune our design. here a some of the best of what we have found ~

zebra-print-rug

with a bigger top to accommodate tucking stools under it, the amount of storage under this table is appealing ~

this work table is not inspiring for our needs in this project, but we are jazzing with take-away ideas from what is the the walls!

we cannot wait to to embark on this part of of the project! we’ll keep you updated. need some help with your space? what we know for sure is that if chaos is contagious, then so is order. cleaning & clearing up a closet, a room or a home might feel like a small act, but it’s the first step to opening doors to the new. and, once this happens, just see what else falls into place.

spice storage solution

I have started cooking a lot for a special personal concierge client & her family & this post is the result of researching a better way to organize their spices. I came across this product ~

each cabinet holds 27 spices & can handle bottles of different sizes. the shelves slide out & then tilt down so that you can see what you are looking for quite easily. here they are in an actual kitchen ~

the ratings are phenomenal! you can even use these for your extracts ~

& sprinkles ~

we would be happy to help you with any organizational issues you are having!

memory jars

we all have them ~ little bits & pieces from a fabulous vacation, theater stubs, fortune cookie sayings, pins from disney, buttons & badges, shells from the beach weekend, small trinkets that have special meaning, etc. when organizing in my client’s homes, I find them in night table, desk & junk drawers & in the midst of other clutter on horizontal surfaces. here is a better idea ~

purchase a large jar ~ home goods always has a great selection at good prices ~ & you now have a home for all your special mementos. and, another clutter solution.

protect & store your holiday ornaments

we are back after a relaxing christmas week & are very excited to begin to bring to fruition our 2012 goals & objectives for running in stilettos.

after setting up multiple trees & putting out decorations for several clients, we know there is an opportunity for better ornament storage solutions in several of our beloved households, so we did a little research & uncovered our favorites to share with you today.

from the container store, protect up to 75 ornaments in this wing-lid stackable bin ~

from frontgate, the telescoping ornament box is a bit of an investment, but holds up to 80 ornaments is so well made it can last for generations ~

from organize, is the 3 drawer ornament storage box that holds 54 ornaments ~

from organize-it, this bin holds 84 ornaments ~

and, in the midst of out research, we happened up this little diy project from martha stewart ~ not sure if this one is worth the trouble, but thought we would share it with you anyway ~

it’s the optimum time of year to tackle all those pesky organization projects that drain our time, resources & energy. contact us for a complimentary consultation & let us come up with a plan to get your life organized once & for all!

a great calendar idea for 2012

it’s the time of year when thoughts go to purchasing a calendar for the upcoming year. we love this idea ~

by etsy artist, say it with style, it is vinyl that is applied to glass that will fit into any standard 16×20 frame. you then use any fine tip dry erase marker to write on the glass side of it.

there are several different calendar styles to choose from ~ even a menu calendar ~

live an organized life

I am an organizer. at heart. yes, I am human & have times where there are dishes in the sink & a stack of papers on my desk, but for all intents & purposes, the infrastructure of organization that exists in my home is spot on. that’s why when it comes to organization, this is my favorite picture ~

this picture melds the concepts of home filled with abundance with absolute order, but that abundance is contained totally within the space that is dedicated to those particular items ~ in this case pantry food storage. there is a place for everything & everything lives in its space. it is the perfect intersection of function with form. logical, but beautiful.

when I begin to work with a new client, one of the first things I tackle is getting all like items together. I recently did a 1-day kitchen organization project for a client. approximately 25% of their kitchen storage had been allotted to office items even though there was a dedicated home office. a mini-library of books & magazines also existed in this kitchen. every portion of the counter tops were covered & the cabinets & drawers were bulging. we not only relocated many boxes of items that belonged in other rooms in the house, but filled up my jeep with box upon box that I took to goodwill for them.

when I finished, there was breathing room in that kitchen & it felt so clean & open. mismatched mugs & water-bottles from companies & conferences were edited down to the couple’s right-sized favorites. what we kept, from wedding presents from 30 years ago to cookware & utensils, was either needed, functional or had true meaning to the pair.

some rooms serve several functions & every home & family is different, so when I organize, I ask lots of questions so the end result works for that client not only on the day I leave, but every day after that.

it is not a huge investment to get your home organized & the end result will always deliver to the client tremendous relief & peace of mind as well as they find they have more time & money saved due to increased efficiency. I can do everything at once or we can break things into little mini-projects like the kitchen project above. contact running in stilettos for a complimentary consultation!

our light bulbs are changing

lest we forget, in less than 4 months on january 1, 2012, a bill signed into law by george bush in 2007 will take effect which will essentially begin the phase-out of standard incandescent light bulbs (this article answers most of the faq). this law requires general service light bulbs to operate up to 30% more efficiently, so this has pointed to an end to the manufacture of incandescent light bulbs in favor of more eco-friendly, energy efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs (cfl) and light emitting diode (led) solutions.

while this law is so applaudable, the timing may not be due increased prices on the cfl by 37% so far this year due to china’s restrictions on rare earth metals. also, cfl bulbs fall short in the looks department & some have a limited ability to work with dimmers.

one of these concerns is addressed by a company called plumen.

plumen bulbs are the antithesis of low energy light bulbs as we know them, rather they are low energy, high appeal & are designed to look like bird’s feathers or plumes, thus the name.

what’s cool about these bulbs is that they look totally different from every angle.

there are reports of people beginning to hoard incandescent bulbs. are you one of them? are you using cfl bulbs yet? what do you like & dislike about them?

our new favorite product

it’s no secret that we love chalkboard paint. so, discovering this product made us very, very happy. they are called wallies.

here is why we love, love wallies ~

peel & stick. cut a label to any size & as your pantry items change, you can remove the wallie & have a clean slate with your jar for another item.

this space was recently transformed ~ it is now 1/2 butler pantry & 1/2 food pantry & every inch of this space has been optimized. job so very well done. read the whole story & see all the pictures here.
